Testing an invasion mechanism for <i>Eucalyptus globulus</i> : Is there evidence of allelopathy?

PREMISE Sparse understory communities, in association with non-native tree species, are often attributed to allelopathy, the chemical inhibition of a plant by another. However, allelopathy is difficult ecological phenomenon demonstrate as many studies show conflicting results. Eucalyptus globulus, native Australia, one most widely planted trees around world. understories common beneath E. globulus plantations and but impacts on communities outside Austrialia poorly understood. METHODS To assess mechanism inhibition, we tested volatile- water-soluble leaf extracts from Salvia apiana, Quercus agrifolia seed germination California plants.
